Laboratory Information System for Clinical Physicians
Takshi Kanno
Abstract
Clinical laboratories are now facing challenges to develop new role, supported by rapid information techniques together with changes in social environment and newly established computerized information system. In 1970s, an objective of laboratory system was to implement progressive automated machines and the end user of the system was laboratory technologists and physicians. However, in the late of 1990s, the laboratory information system has been now systematized into management and control system and the end user of this system included the clinical physicians and patients. In this paper, we will summarize newly established laboratory and control system and suggest that this system will develop the new relationship between laboratory information system and clinical physicians.
1. Laboratory information system for the perspective of quality assurance
Supporting system for test planning and request is very important for clinical physicians. Then, laboratory information system should be linked with hospital information system (HIS). HIS supports easy requisition and further requisition from the laboratory data presented now. Sometimes, how to collect the specific sample will display at the terminals of nurse station or out patient clinics.
Unique identification system will support the control of analytical and data analysis steps. Utilization of bi-directional computer interface made it possible to introduce real time transmission of analytical results to physicians, re-analysis system to assure the analytical results and quick responses from clinical side to laboratory.
It is very important to introduce real time data monitoring and verification system and their association with feedback system for analysis.
Based on the concept of quality assurance, laboratory data produced in this system are very quick and reliable.
2. An offer of another information related to medical training and teaching
Laboratory data accumulated in the laboratory information system dealt with statistically and provided to clinical physicians. This information will establish the evidence based medical approaches. Results of suscep¡þtibility test of antibiotics and frequencies of the microspecies detected in biological samples will compensate the slow responses of microbiological laboratory. This information was very effective both for the medical training and medical treatment.
The value of aolipoprotein C2 was closely related with the value of triglyceride. Then, the estimated value of C2 from triglyceride is very informative for medical students and non-specialists of lipid metabolism. These informative data will provide from the accumulated laboratory data in the system.
3. Resources for medical reserches
Our laboratory information system provides ens user computing system for laboratory technologists, laboratory and clinical physicians. Employing this system, people could extract the needed laboratory information from the system and convert the file to the commercially available software such as Excel or Lotus 123. This end user computing system fully supports the researches of laboratory and clinical physicians.
